Visionary Man
Words and Music by Mark McNutt
**Big feet pounding the ground
Big voice make a mighty sound
His raging motors - His smoky lands
We're in the presence of the visionary man,

Polish up my Ford 'til it gleams like a jet
Give me a tie rack and some shiny shoes,
I'll comb my hair like the big boys do
Because I want some money - I want some money too,
Put me in the brainpan of Babylon
And let me smile down from the clouds
Iwant to feel those puppet strings in my hand
Control is my thing
I want to be a visionary man,

**Debt is good - You'll learn to like it
I liked it too when I looked like you
Ain't felt it lately - You feel it now
But don't you worry you'll get by somehow,

Competition ends so much better than Love
They say with Love nobody wins,
And lying can be fun - It's all for the best
Just settle back, relax, and put your mind at rest,
And let's hear it for war! - I got one right here
It'll pull us all right out of this slump.
And then I'll want to be thanked - I want a brass band
I want it all now
I want to be a visionary man

Thank you for your water, for your trees      and your air
Now you may have this pretty thing.
The sun sets golden in a dimming sky
I hear it's for sale - Well oh, my, my,

Daddy is a hot-shot and Mom's a go-getter
And baby stays at home bonding with the baby-sitter,
We're playing by rules that we don't understand
We're walking in the footsteps of the visionary man.

Mark should be writing something here, and maybe later on, we can get him to put his own
spin on this   As for myself, I only became aware of 'Visionary Man' a couple of months before
it was put on the 'Roads Not Taken' CD.  Peggy was working up pretty much all of the above
information on Marks own solo web page and creating CD copies for Mark to hand out at his
live solo outings. I got to hear it and read the lyrics at the same time.  I love this song!

I really enjoyed hearing Mark flex his muscles on the lyrics.  Its wonderfully political with a
great sense of dark humor.  In fact, the scope of his imagery is so fine tuned and broad at the
same time that you can infer multiple things on multiple levels.  Just who, or what exactly, is the
visionary man?  Big business?  Big Goverment?  Some religious dude?  I won't pretend myself
to know the answer, but after having listened to the song repeatedly with a smile upon my face

I'
ve come away with an inkling that in all probability,.....its really Mark.

Doc's Notes:

Mark had me put this song on a demo CD he had me make for him.  I loved it.  It was a lot different than the usual Mark lyrics which were well I hate to say 'nice'. (Sorry Mark) I always knew Mark had it in him to be dark and sarcastic and this hit the nail on the head. I loved the version on the Demo CD but for the album Mark wanted to spice it up and add Doc's harmonizing. Since he wanted it even more upbeat than it was originally I decided to have fun with it and it was a delight to produce. I want to be a Visionary (Wo) Man !!!
