Turning Of The World |
The map of the world can be found in the cracks that run across the ceiling fractures are roads stains are the lakes mountains where paint is peeling the cities and towns that's the mildew dark brown cigarette smoke is the clouds from where I lay floating I feel out of body far above the maddening crowds The turning of the world is not so real movements imperceptible there's nothing to feel we're spinning round the sun spinning in place galaxies like windmills spiral through space and I'm taken by the emptiness it's all so immense our lessons in address seem of small consequence Now the tell-tale signs of the passage of time can be found in the lines round my eyes crows feet from the laughter wrinkles from the pain circles no sleep can disguise The seasons all spin lines of beauty within I fold them away neatly creased laughing and crying living and dying it's all the same release The turning of the world is not so real we're moving too fast nobody feels spinning in place spinning in and out of each others embrace and I'm taken by the emptiness it's all so immense and how we try to fill it at each others expense Now the notion of rest it's just an illusion we're all in perpetual motion atoms and molecule gravity and light waves rolling over the oceans life's what you do with what happens to you people blame it on everything else we're all of us influenced by some jurisprudence that never can see itself The turning of the world is not so real everything is relative to how much you feel The rooms spinning round like the thoughts in my head everyone lays where they've made their beds and I'm taken by the emptiness it's all so immense and how one single person makes a difference how one single person makes a difference |
Doc's Notes: We all live our live in direct relationship to every thing that exists in the universe at any given moment. Yet for the most part we learned to narrow our scope of awareness down to the petty day to day routines that run our lives and motivations. It's not that we don't care about our place in regard to the grand scheme of things but rather we've come to take so much of it for granted. Worlds within worlds become one dimensional and the laws of physics just don't figure all that prominently into the business of the day. We are indigenous to certain influences and variable conditions. Some of them help us grow expeditiously, others are self-imposed. Still others keep us from having to deal with those things which may be too hard for us to handle otherwise... This was a very ambitious poem which just rolled out of me in one sitting. It gave me the weird feeling that sometimes life is the dry run for the creative work we are currently working on.. The Turning Of The World was written around October of 2005. The lyrics came first. A lot of lyrics. All of them tumbling out in a single sitting. I've done this before because I write a lot of poetry, but, mostly I write in large blocks of thought and usually piece them all together later on. This was different It was the first time I've ever written so much so fast. In 2006 Mark came down to Witchwood for our second round of recording sessions for Eye Of The Storm. I re member we had already recorded two other song previously in the day and it was late in the evening when we started kicking around melody and ideas for this one. In fact, I believe we just started out talking about what we were planning to work on the next day and it just got more and more interesting with a steady stream of music and arrangements flowing. Being late we just played everything quietly to Mark's acoustic guitar. The next day we took the song one step further and added keyboards. It was a very different sort of number for us. |
